Martin Berkery

Martin Berkery was the husband of Winifred Dennison ("Big Winnie"). He was the son of John Berkery and Ellen Ryan and was born on 11th Nov 1866 in or near "Garden Hill", Limerick (LDS gives Annacotty) and lived at Annacotty, Co. Limerick, Ireland. He had one brother and two sisters.

His brother Patrick was born in 1855, married Kate Johnson (born 1858 in US, parents Thomas Johnson and Catherine Burns) on 29/7/1883 (witnesses Joseph Johnson and Maggie Berkery). They lived in Glouchester City, NJ.

Martin's sisters were Ellen (born 1/4/1864 at Newport, Bogroad?) and Mary (born 24/3/1864 - too close to Ellen - or too far apart!).

He married Winifred Dennison and they had 4 children - Emmanuel Denniston (Denny) (~1897), Thomas J. (Tom) (~1901), Edwin A. (Ed) (~1904) and one girl, Mary Winifred (~1907)

He went to the U.S. in 1880 (1900 census) or 1888 (1930 census). The family lived in Philadelphia City and Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

Miscellaneous Notes

US Birth, Marriage and Death Records: Lawrence Berkery died 8/7/1954 in LA. Born NJ 12/11/1886. Father’s surname Berkery, mother Johnston (son of Patrick an Kate?)

In the US Census 1930 (May 6th), Winifred is 62 and got married when she was 27. This puts her date of birth in the first half of 1868. Martin is 63 and got married when he was 28. This tallies with his date of birth given above. She is given as having immigrated in 1888.

In the US Census of 1910 (Apr 21st), the Berkerys had a cousin called Afric Diver staying with them. Afric is 26years old and an 'alterer' in a Department Store. She immigrated to the US in 1909 or 1889 (barely legible - check back again).
