Death and Funeral of Mr. George Denniston, Drim, Carrigart

The news of the demise of Mr. George Denniston, of Drim, Carrigart, has occasioned keen regret and sympathy, not only in his native parish, but throughout a large portion of Co. Donegal. Deceased had been in indifferent health for more than a year past, but his friends had always hoped that he would recover and be once more in the enjoyment of good health. But these hopes, unfortunately, did not materialise. About a fortnight ago he became weaker, and despite the best medical attention he, fortified by the last rites of Holy Church, of which he was a devout and faithful member, passed peacefully away in full possession of all his faculties, and in the presence of his grief-stricken wife and the members of his family, to whom the deepest sympathy has been extended in their irreparable loss. The late Mr. Denniston, who was about 70 years of age, and belonged to a highly respectable family, was a near relative of the late Dr. M'Gettigan, Archbishop of Armagh, and was also closely related to the illustrious Passionist preacher, the late Father Norbet M'Gettigan, and his no less renowned brother, the late Rev. Dr. Daniel M'Gettigan. He was a sterling type of Irishman, and a supporter of every movement for the betterment and emancipation of his country. An extensive and industrious farmer, he followed this vocation with singular success. His genial and kindly disposition, his broad-mindedness, and hospitality won for him the esteem and regard of all who came in contact with him.

His remains were removed from his residence on Tuesday last for interment in Umlagh Graveyard. The funeral cortege was of a large and representative character, and a striking manifestation of the respect in which deceased and his family have been held.

The chief mourners were—Mrs. Denniston (widow), Mr. M. Denniston (son), Mrs. Coyle, Mrs. Boyce, and Mrs. Kelly (daughters), Mrs. K. Friel (sister), Rev. Father Sheridan, P.P. (cousin), and a large number of other relatives.

Father Sheridan, P.P., who officiated at the graveside, in a brief but beautiful panegyric, paid a touching tribute to the memory of the deceased.—R.I.P.
